It is not bad luck. It is bad engineering. Peonies are biologically hardwired to thrive for fifty years or more, but they have one non-negotiable demand: oxygenated root zones. If your soil holds water for more than a few hours after a rain, you are not gardening; you are running a slow-motion drowning tank. If your soil is tight, the water sits. If the water sits, the roots rot. It is that simple. We also test for pH. Peonies hate acidic soil. If you are below 6.0, we add pelletized lime. We don’t use the dusty stuff; it’s a mess and doesn’t last.
