Stop Killing 2026 Lavender: 3 Drainage Secrets [Zone 7] Lavender is not a plant; it is a Mediterranean sub-shrub that behaves like a civil engineering project. Most homeowners in Zone 7 treat it like a petunia, and by the following July, they are looking at a gray, mushy skeleton. I always drill into my new…

Why Your Evergreens Are Turning Yellow (The Forensic Autopsy) Evergreens turn yellow primarily due to iron chlorosis or nutrient lockout caused by alkaline soil conditions that prevent the root system from absorbing essential minerals. When the soil pH rises above 6.5 or 7.0, micronutrients like iron and manganese become chemically bonded to soil particles, making…

Stop Fighting Your Soil: Why Clay is Actually a Landscaping Asset Gardening in heavy clay requires moving beyond the surface and understanding that clay soil and full sun provide a high nutrient-holding capacity that, when managed with proper landscaping techniques, supports some of the most resilient species in the trade. While DIYers complain about ‘brick-like’…

Mastering the Under-Deck Microclimate for Successful Planting To successfully grow plants in the dark space under your deck, you must mitigate the rain shadow effect and soil compaction that typically characterizes these areas. Achieving sustainable growth requires soil remediation with high-quality organic matter and the implementation of precision drip irrigation to compensate for the lack…

The Engineering of a Small Front Yard Landscape Successful small yard landscaping starts with a fundamental understanding of site civil engineering and soil biology. A tiny front yard provides no margin for error regarding root expansion or canopy spread. I always drill into my new crew members: if you don’t fix the soil grading first,…

Why You Should Not Plant Leyland Cypress, Bradford Pear, or Silver Maple for Privacy Common privacy trees like the Leyland Cypress, Bradford Pear, and Silver Maple are often avoided by professional landscapers because they exhibit severe structural weaknesses, high susceptibility to pathogens, and aggressive root systems that damage hardscaping and underground utilities. Most homeowners think they want a garden, but what they actually want is a self-sustaining biological system that does not require…

The Engineering Reality of Wet Clay Landscapes Wet clay soil groundcovers require specific physiological adaptations to survive high bulk density and low oxygen diffusion rates found in heavy soils. To successfully establish groundcovers in wet clay, you must choose species with rhizomatous growth patterns or adventitious root systems that can tolerate periodic anaerobic conditions. Proper…
