Water Features and Ponds

The Foundation of Aquatic Winterization I always drill into my new crew members: if you don’t fix the soil grading first, every plant you put in the ground is just expensive compost. The same logic applies to water features. Most homeowners treat a pond like a bathtub, but it is actually a complex biological reactor….

Understanding Why Your Pond Filter is Failing to Clear Murky Water Pond water remains murky when the biological load exceeds the filtration capacity or when colloidal particles are too small for mechanical media to trap. To fix this, you must balance the nitrogen cycle, manage nutrient runoff from your landscaping, and ensure your pump GPH…

Why Your Pond Looks Like Pea Soup Algae blooms are caused by excessive nutrient loads (phosphorus and nitrogen) combined with high UV exposure, which fuels rapid cellular division in single-celled phytoplankton. This biological imbalance creates a hypoxic environment that starves your pond of oxygen. You must disrupt this cycle at a cellular level using targeted…

Fix a Leaky 2026 Pond Liner for Under $50 [Step-by-Step] I recently got called out to tear up a $30,000 patio and pond installation that was sinking because the previous contractor failed to address a simple $2 puncture in the 45-mil EPDM liner. The hydrostatic pressure of the leaking water had saturated the sub-base, turning…

I recently got called out to tear up a $3,000 backyard water feature that had turned into a stagnant, mosquito-infested pit because the previous contractor failed to understand the basic mechanics of water oxygenation. The homeowner thought they were buying a low-maintenance water feature, but without proper flow and filtration, they were just breeding pathogens….

Fix Your 2026 Cloudy Pond Water with Barley Straw You wake up, walk out to your custom EPDM-lined koi pond, and instead of seeing your expensive Grade-A Show Sanke, you see a thick, green sludge. It looks like pea soup. Your pump is straining, your filters are clogged every six hours, and your wife is…

The Fundamentals of Backyard Hydrology and Site Planning To build a $250 backyard waterfall, you must focus on site hydrology, liner integrity, and pump GPH. The process involves excavating a stepped basin, installing a 45 mil EPDM liner, and utilizing recycled local stone to manage costs while ensuring structural stability and efficient water circulation. I…

The Engineering Reality of Small-Scale Water Features Building a functional water feature in a limited footprint requires a strict adherence to hydraulic engineering and soil stabilization rather than just aesthetic placement. Backyard waterfall styles for small spaces center on maximizing vertical lift while minimizing the horizontal footprint through the use of subterranean reservoirs, high-efficiency pumps,…

I always drill into my new crew members: if you don’t fix the soil grading first, every plant you put in the ground is just expensive compost. The same hard-nosed logic applies to water features. Most homeowners see green water and reach for a jug of copper sulfate or some high-octane algaecide they bought at…

The Forensic Autopsy of a Vanishing Stream A leaking waterfall is typically caused by liner settling, capillary wicking, or plumbing failure. To fix it in one afternoon, you must isolate the pump system, inspect the EPDM liner edges, and apply MS Polymer sealant to any structural breaches or bio-falls connections. This process requires immediate diagnostic…
